Helianthus: a haiku
The sunflower
Alive or press’d for its fine oil
Provides us much joy
Not a great welcome
It looks forbidding
The wording is plain and quite clear
Best to keep out.
The gardener’s enemy
It slithers and slides
Devouring valued plants:
A slimy intruder
Removing stains, not memories
A tin of Ajax
Can scrub away the stains
But memories linger
Watch out! Snakes about!
Mind the adders
One bite by these fine serpents
Could subtract from your life
A short life
With wings of colour
A life so very brief
The butterfly takes rest
Winds of change
As with opinions
It turns as the wind moves
The humble weathervane
Along the canal
Passing the bridge
The swan swims serenely
Along the manmade channel
The cat on a sack
With paws crossed
Curled up on a sack of compost
A cat naps serenely
